The Story

Since 1998 in a
magical valley

When Bob and Henja set off from Eindhoven to the Ardennes forests in November 1998 to buy Herberg La Truite d'Argent, they had one feeling: something special is going to grow here. A valley with no other houses within sight, surrounded by imposing forests, cut through by a meandering stream. "Picture perfect", they still call it — and it has stayed exactly that.

What began in 1970 as a modest inn grew under their hands into a mini-resort with its own distinctive signature: homely, informal, comfortable and deliberately small in scale. Hotel rooms became suites. A first cabane appeared among the trees. Then chalets. And since June 2025, a spacious Lodge for four people.

In the 2010s, Bob & Henja organised the legendary festival La Truite Magique — named by an American magazine as one of the five best forest festivals in the world. Covid brought it to an end, but the good memories are here forever.

Today the story is in a new phase: more sustainable, smarter, more outspoken. But the foundation has stayed the same — a place for kindred spirits, where life takes centre stage and time slows down. Not perfection, but the perfect place for outdoor activities, relaxed enjoyment, and convivial dining in an improbably beautiful setting.

"This is a magical place. We're going to make something beautiful here — and we're going to do it together, just the two of us." — Bob & Henja, November 1998
100% Adults Only

A hide-away for
grown-up travellers

No playground, no high chairs, no barking dogs in the garden. Instead: silence you can hear, a log fire that crackles, and evenings that never quite end.

Exclusively for couples

Every accommodation is designed for two. Box-spring beds, private bathroom, and in many suites an In-Suite Bistro or Culinary Corner of your own. No shared spaces, no crowds.

Grown-up calm

18+ across the entire estate. No children, no pets. Which keeps an evening with a glass of wine on the terrace exactly what it should be: undisturbed and intimate.

Hidden in the valley

No other house within sight. A babbling stream, views to the horizon, and the sound of chirping birds instead of traffic.

Small in scale, big in character

A maximum of 13 accommodations and seven tables in the restaurant. No chain experience — but personal hospitality from Bob & Henja, for more than a quarter century.

From garden to plate — honest food, served with genuine warmth

Seven tables. A deliberate choice.

We grow our own vegetables where we can and supplement with produce from trusted local suppliers. We cook with the seasons — from fresh garden herbs and orchard fruit to game from our own woods.

With only seven tables we know exactly what we need that evening. We source it, prepare it fresh, and nothing is wasted. Honest to you, honest to the producers, honest to the surroundings.

Booking is required and arranged in good time — a week before your arrival you'll receive the seasonal menu in your inbox, and you simply choose what you'd like. We take care of the rest.

Slow-cooked chicken with a 'bite' For two. Straight from the oven to the table.
Vegetarian Liège meatballs The legendary boulettes, plant-based.

Les Deux Ourthes

Walking

Straight from the front door into the forests. Walk to the lost Celtic village of St. Martin with its ancient beeches, or climb to the Panorama of the Five Ourthes for breathtaking views. Routes for every level, and always coming home to the log fire.

Mountain bike & Cycling

Houffalize is one of Belgium's mountain biking capitals — think of the Roc d'Ardenne. But quieter cycling routes along the Ourthe and through the Nature Park are just as close. We're happy to point out the most beautiful routes.

Worth seeing

Charming Houffalize, the moving Bastogne War Museum, the caves of Han, castles, breweries and typical Ardennes villages. The area has enough to offer that you'll be planning a second visit — and a third.
