When Bob and Henja set off from Eindhoven to the Ardennes forests in November 1998
to buy Herberg La Truite d'Argent, they had one feeling: something special is going to grow here.
A valley with no other houses within sight, surrounded by imposing forests, cut through by
a meandering stream. "Picture perfect", they still call it — and it has stayed exactly that.
What began in 1970 as a modest inn grew under their hands into a
mini-resort with its own distinctive signature: homely, informal, comfortable and
deliberately small in scale. Hotel rooms became suites. A first cabane appeared among
the trees. Then chalets. And since June 2025, a spacious Lodge for four people.
In the 2010s, Bob & Henja organised the legendary festival La Truite Magique
— named by an American magazine as one of the five best forest festivals in the world. Covid brought it to an end, but the good memories are here forever.
Today the story is in a new phase: more sustainable, smarter, more outspoken. But the
foundation has stayed the same — a place for kindred spirits, where life takes centre stage
and time slows down. Not perfection, but the perfect place for outdoor activities,
relaxed enjoyment, and convivial dining in an improbably beautiful setting.
"This is a magical place. We're going to make something beautiful here — and we're going to do it together, just the two of us."
— Bob & Henja, November 1998
