Introduction

La Truite d'Argent is a small-scale adults-only mini-resort hidden in a quiet valley in the Belgian Ardennes, 10 kilometres from Houffalize. Six unique accommodation types — from a tiny house by the stream to romantic in-house suites — offer couples a weekend away from crowds, daily concerns and responsibilities. On weekends, the in-house restaurant 'The Kingdom of Dreams' opens its doors to dining guests. La Truite d'Argent celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2026.

Philosophy & approach

Less, and done well

La Truite d'Argent has been run for 25 years by Bob Muileboom and Henja Govers — just the two of them, without any staff. This is not a temporary situation: it is a deliberate choice on which the entire resort is built.

"From the very beginning we decided what we did not want to become. Not a large hotel with a reception and a team of staff. Not an accommodation that we would have to hand over to people who see a job here rather than a passion. We believe it's better to offer less selectively and do it extremely well, than to offer a lot that is merely so-so."

— Bob Muileboom

That choice explains almost everything about La Truite d'Argent:

  • 13 units, not 50. The number is calibrated to what two people can personally welcome, clean and maintain with care.
  • Restaurant The Kingdom of Dreams only on weekends, with seven tables and a pre-selected menu. No à-la-carte, not open the whole week. But time for every plate.
  • Adults-only. Not as a marketing claim, but because a family hotel requires completely different logistics than two people can offer.
  • No partnerships with Booking.com, Expedia or other large OTAs. All reservations come in through the self-built booking system on la-truite.com.

This last point is exceptional in Ardennes hospitality. Where most small hotels source a substantial share of their bookings through online platforms — paying up to a quarter in commission — La Truite d'Argent has never built that dependency.

"We want to own the relationship with our guest ourselves. From the first email to the final farewell. That cannot work when there is a platform in between that manages our guest list and sets our prices."

— Henja Govers

In 2026 La Truite d'Argent went one step further: it terminated its external booking platform and built its own Internet Booking Engine and Property Management System. Developed entirely in-house, without SaaS subscriptions. This makes the resort not only operationally but also technically fully independent — a rarity in a sector that is becoming increasingly dependent on a handful of large technology parties.

"Staying small is not a limitation. It's a choice." — Bob Muileboom

25-year anniversary · 1 July 2026

A quarter century in the Ardennes

2001 — 2026

La Truite d'Argent is more than a mini-resort; it is a story. It began in 1998, when Bob Muileboom and Henja Govers from Eindhoven discovered the inn La Truite d'Argent, tucked deep away in a quiet Ardennes valley. Three years later, on 1 July 2001, they reopened the place. Their vision was clear: peace, romance and connection with nature, exclusively for adults, in a small-scale and unpretentious setting that offers an escape from the everyday.

Here the good times always keep going… and you are more than welcome.

La Truite d'Argent is an adults-only mini-resort in the Belgian Ardennes, 10 kilometres from Houffalize. The inn has existed since 1970; in 2001 Bob Muileboom and Henja Govers reopened the place under their own management. Twenty-five years later they still run the resort together — without staff, without partnerships with online booking platforms. "Better to offer selectively and do it extremely well, than to offer a lot that is merely so-so," says Bob.

The resort has thirteen units spread across six accommodation types, each with its own character: from intimate Cabanes — a tiny house by a stream — to in-house suites, from the authentic Chalet Mont Juru to the spacious Lodge for four people. The positioning is uncompromisingly adults-only: adults only (18+), no children, no pets. On weekends (Friday through Sunday), the in-house restaurant 'The Kingdom of Dreams' opens its doors; seven tables, pre-selected menu, for house guests as well as external visitors. For those travelling by camper who come to dine, three carefully appointed overnight spots in the valley are available — not a campsite in the classic sense, but an extension of the dinner.

The resort is located in Deux Ourthes Natural Park, one of the least touristy regions of Belgium. Reservations go exclusively through the self-built booking system on la-truite.com — a deliberate choice not to outsource the relationship with the guest to a third party. On 1 July 2026, La Truite d'Argent celebrates its 25th anniversary under current ownership.

Extended story

The founding

The inn La Truite d'Argent has existed since 1970. In 1998 the estate came up for sale. When Bob and Henja walked the grounds, they felt it immediately: "This is a magical place. We're going to make something truly beautiful here — and we're going to do it just the two of us." On 1 July 2001 they reopened the place under their own management.

They wanted to develop a new style of stay: homely, informal, comfortable and deliberately small-scale. A place that serves authentic, local food and is rooted in the Ardennes nature. Twenty-five years later La Truite d'Argent has grown into a place for like-minded spirits — where life itself is central.

The philosophy

La Truite d'Argent is explicitly adults-only: minimum age 18, no exceptions. The underlying conviction is that this gives everyone peace. This positioning is rare in Ardennes hospitality, where many accommodations specifically target families.

More than 90% of La Truite d'Argent guests are couples specifically seeking this atmosphere: often between 30-70 years old, with a high return rate. Those who come once often book again.

The accommodations

Six types of built accommodation, plus three spots for camper travellers who come to dine with us:

  • The Lodge — spacious holiday home for 2-4 people, fully equipped
  • Chalet Mont Juru — authentic wooden chalet, two units
  • Cabane — four tiny houses by the stream, intimate and romantic
  • Dream Suite — two suites with bathtub and panoramic view
  • Wellness Suite — suite with private infrared sauna and bathtub
  • Valley Suite — three suites with valley view
  • Camp & Dinner — three carefully appointed spots for camper travellers who come to dine at The Kingdom of Dreams. Not a campsite in the classic sense: the spots belong to the restaurant, not the other way round.

The restaurant — The Kingdom of Dreams

On weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) the in-house restaurant opens its doors. The menu changes seasonally and uses local producers where possible. The restaurant has seven tables in an atmosphere built around music, light and personal attention. Since 2026, the restaurant is also open to external guests. Reservations and advance online menu selection are mandatory.

For guests coming by camper to dine, the restaurant offers three carefully appointed spots on the grounds — not a campsite, but an extension of the dinner. Those who stop here come first to dine and second to walk.

The location

La Truite d'Argent is located in Deux Ourthes Natural Park, one of the quietest regions of Belgium. Immediate surroundings: walking and cycling paths through the woods, viewpoints over the Ourthes valleys, Celtic settlements, the Bernistap canal. The larger Ardenne attractions (Bastogne War Museum, Grottes de Han, La Roche-en-Ardenne) are within half an hour's drive.
